1989/2009 - Germany celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

As a bulwark of concrete and barrier fences the Wall cut through Berlin for a length of over 43 kilometres – dividing the city and the whole of Germany. 20 years have passed since the Fall of the Wall which led to German Unity and  marked the beginning of a new era in history. Here you can follow these historic moments:

Friedrich Schiller’s 250th birthday (10.11.1759)

Thinker, Poet, Dramatist – Champion of Freedom People regarded him as a “great poetic genius”, a man devoted to “the true, the good and the beautiful”. He saw himself as a “global citizen serving no prince”. On the occasion of Friedrich Schiller’s 250th birthday, a portrait of a man who died at not even 46 years of age.

“The Robbers”, “William Tell”, “Mary Stuart”: his powerful plays still live on and have made him one of the internationally best known German thinkers and poets. Alongside Goethe, the most important representative of Classicism and Storm and Stress is also one of the most often performed dramatists in Germany. “Sire, grant us freedom of thought,” he demanded in “Don Carlos”, two years before the French Revolution. And to this day Schiller’s central themes of freedom and oppression continue to fascinate and fire directors and audiences alike.

That Ever Child-Like Quality – The 80th Anniversary of Michael Ende’s Birth

Michael Ende, one of Germany’s most popular post-war writers of children’s books, would have turned 80 this year. The son of the Surrealist painter Edgar Ende was born in Garmisch-Patenkirchen on 12 November 1929 and died on 28 August 1995. His books, which include “Die unendliche Geschichte” (The Neverending Story), “Momo” and “Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer” (Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver), have been translated into 45 languages and have sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Germany’s National Academy of Sciences celebrates its first anniversary

The German Academy of Natural Scientists “Leopoldina” in Halle an der Saale – named as Germany’s National Academy of Sciences a year ago – is celebrating its first anniversary in 2009.

Welcome to the Berlinale Talent Campus

From February 13-18, 2010, the Berlinale Talent Campus will open its doors at the Theater Hebbel am Ufer and welcome 350 young filmmakers and students from all over the world during the Berlin International Film Festival. The eighth Berlinale Talent Campus will address the theme "Cinema Needs Talent: Looking for the Right People." Producers, directors, actors, cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, production designers, film composers, sound designers, film journalists and visual artists from all over the world are invited to apply online through the Campus website. The application deadline is October 7, 2009. 

DAAD: Berlin Artists-in-Residence programme

The Berlin Artists-in-Residence programme is one of the most renowned international programs offering grants to artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, music, film and dance/performance. Each year, some 20 grants are awarded to international artists for approximately a one-year stay in Berlin.  The aim of the Artists-in-Berlin Programme is to offer a forum for cultural exchange and artistic dialogue and to provide freedom for artistic work by endeavouring to liberate creativity from the dictates of the market. The application with materials must as a rule be submitted before January 1. The jury meets in the spring.

Ways out of the climate crisis

When the representatives from over 190 countries meet in December 2009 in Copenhagen at the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 15), they will be focusing on the future of our planet. In the Danish capital the delegates will negotiate a new, binding international agreement on climate protection designed to succeed the present Kyoto Protocol in 2013. Many of the data used by the experts come from Bonn.

Germany-South Africa: Let's stay Friends - From 2006 to 2010 and beyond

A new special website is dedicated to showcase the support Germany gives to football projects in South Africa. Germany and South Africa have enjoyed a close partnership for many years. With this in mind, it is no surprise that Germany and South Africa, as consecutive hosts of FIFA Football World Cups, also work closely together in this area.

The site, in English and German, also offers useful information to all visitors and international football fans about the event and its host country. The FIFA Football World Cup 2010  will show the world a new, more dynamic face of Africa.
